The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All keno probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, the same formula used in every state lottery's official odds disclosures.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 80. Each draw is independent, so past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(80−m, 20−k)C(80, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(80,6) = 38,760 / 300,500,200
= 1 in 7,753

PUT THESE NUMBERS TO WORK

Hot and cold runs never move the odds, but spot count and bet size do. These work out what a Georgia KENO! ticket is actually worth.

PLAYING GEORGIA KENO!

These draws come from the Georgia Lottery's KENO!, one of the faster cycles among the southern state lotteries.

Draw schedule and what a session costs

Georgia draws roughly every 3.5 minutes, about 17 games an hour. Wagers run $1 up to $10 per game in $1 steps, and the base top prize is $100,000 on a 10-spot.

Find a place to play

KENO! is sold at authorized Georgia Lottery retailers: convenience stores, gas stations, bars and restaurants. Fill out a play slip with 1 to 10 numbers from 1 to 80 or ask for a Quick Pick, choose your wager, and the retailer prints the ticket.

You can browse 1,375 Georgia Keno locations by city on KenoSpots, with the address, phone number and a directions link for each one.

Multiplier and Bulls-Eye

Georgia offers two separate add-ons and each one doubles your base ticket cost, so playing both triples what a plain ticket would cost. Multiplier picks a value at the start of each drawing worth 2X, 3X, 5X or 10X, and some draws come up with no multiplier at all. Bulls-Eye designates one of the 20 winning numbers at the end of the draw, and matching it pays a Bulls-Eye prize on top of your regular win. You can add either or both.

Claiming a win, and what tax applies

Smaller prizes are normally paid straight back at the retailer that sold the ticket, and larger ones go through a lottery claim center or a mail-in claim. Federal rules treat a state lottery keno prize like any other lottery prize: once your winnings minus the wager clear $5,000, the lottery withholds 24% for the IRS before it pays you, and smaller prizes can still be reported on a Form W-2G. Georgia taxes lottery winnings as income as well, and the lottery withholds at the state level on larger prizes, so check the operator's own claim page for the current thresholds and rate before you plan around a number.

Worth knowing

Adding both add-ons turns a $1 play into a $3 ticket, so decide which one fits your goal: Multiplier widens the size of any win, Bulls-Eye adds a separate prize path. Our heatmap above covers every Georgia draw for the selected day.
