The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All keno probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, the same formula used in every state lottery's official odds disclosures.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 80. Each draw is independent, so past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(80−m, 20−k)C(80, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(80,6) = 38,760 / 300,500,200
= 1 in 7,753

PUT THESE NUMBERS TO WORK

Hot and cold runs never move the odds, but spot count and bet size do. These work out what an Oregon Keno ticket is actually worth.

PLAYING OREGON KENO

These draws come from the Oregon Lottery, which launched the first US lottery keno game and still runs one of the longest-established keno operations in the country.

Draw schedule and what a session costs

Oregon draws every 4 minutes, and wagers run $1, $2, $3, $5, $10 or $20 per game. Oregon is one of the few states where the board starts at 2 spots rather than 1, so the smallest ticket you can play is a 2-spot. The published house edge sits around 25%, which is at the friendlier end for lottery keno.

Find a place to play

The Oregon Lottery had roughly 3,800 licensed retailers statewide in fiscal year 2025. Bars and taverns are the most common keno venue, followed by restaurants, convenience stores and grocery stores. Look for the green Oregon Lottery sign. Not every retailer runs a monitor: the ones that do show the live board on a TV screen, which is where the game is usually played over a meal or a drink, and any retailer that sells keno can print a ticket even without a screen. Oregon's minimum age to play is 18.

You can browse 3,007 Oregon Keno locations by city on KenoSpots, with the address, phone number and a directions link for each one.

Bulls-Eye

Oregon's distinctive feature is Bulls-Eye. One of the 20 drawn numbers is designated the Bulls-Eye number, and if one of your spots matches it you collect a bonus prize on top of your regular keno win. It is an optional add-on that costs extra per ticket, and the bonus payout varies by spot count, so it behaves like a multiplier on the draws where it lands.

Claiming a win, and what tax applies

Smaller prizes are normally paid straight back at the retailer that sold the ticket, and larger ones go through a lottery claim center or a mail-in claim. Federal rules treat a state lottery keno prize like any other lottery prize: once your winnings minus the wager clear $5,000, the lottery withholds 24% for the IRS before it pays you, and smaller prizes can still be reported on a Form W-2G. Oregon taxes lottery winnings as income as well, and the lottery withholds at the state level on larger prizes, so check the operator's own claim page for the current thresholds and rate before you plan around a number.

Worth knowing

Oregon does not offer online keno sales, so the ticket has to be bought in person. If your local retailer has no monitor, the Oregon Lottery app carries the draws, and our hot and cold analysis above covers every Oregon draw of the day.
