The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All keno probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, the same formula used in every state lottery's official odds disclosures.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 80. Each draw is independent, so past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(80−m, 20−k)C(80, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(80,6) = 38,760 / 300,500,200
= 1 in 7,753

PUT THESE NUMBERS TO WORK

Hot and cold runs never move the odds, but spot count and bet size do. These work out what a Wyoming Keno ticket is actually worth.

PLAYING WYOLOTTO KENO

The draws above come from WyoLotto, the Wyoming Lottery, which added KENO to its lineup in 2022 as one of the state's first fast-draw products.

Draw schedule and what a session costs

Wyoming draws frequently during retailer operating hours. The game uses the universal keno format of 80 numbers with 20 drawn per game, and you pick from 1 to 10 spots across as many consecutive draws as you choose.

Find a place to play

WyoLotto KENO is sold at Wyoming Lottery retailers across the state, including in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie and Gillette. You can watch the draws on monitors at participating retailers or check the numbers afterwards here. You must be 18 or older to play, and WyoLotto returns its proceeds to Wyoming cities, towns and counties.

You can browse 96 Wyoming keno locations by city on KenoSpots, with the address, phone number and a directions link for each one.

A late arrival to lottery keno

Wyoming is a relative newcomer: the state only launched a lottery at all in 2014 and did not add keno until 2022, so the game has a much shorter history here than in Oregon or Ohio. The consequence for players is a smaller retailer network than in long-established keno states, so it is worth confirming a location carries KENO before making a trip.

Claiming a win, and what tax applies

Smaller prizes are normally paid straight back at the retailer that sold the ticket, and larger ones go through a lottery claim center or a mail-in claim. Wyoming levies no state income tax, so nothing is withheld at the state level and a prize is not taxed by the state. Federal rules treat a state lottery keno prize like any other lottery prize: once your winnings minus the wager clear $5,000, the lottery withholds 24% for the IRS before it pays you, and smaller prizes can still be reported on a Form W-2G.

Worth knowing

Because the prize table is set per spot count by the Wyoming Lottery, check the official WyoLotto rules alongside the odds calculator above before committing to a spot count.
