The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All Keno Atlantic probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, calculated for the game's 1 to 70 number field.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 70. Each draw is independent: past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(70−m, 20−k)C(70, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(70,6)
= 1 in 3,383

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Once a day, at about 11:30 PM Atlantic Time. Each draw pulls 20 numbers from a field of 70.

Keno Atlantic is built around a 70-number field, the same as Ontario's Daily Keno. This changes the odds compared with standard 80-number keno, so all probabilities on this page are calculated for 70.

You choose between 2 and 10 numbers (spots) on a Keno Atlantic ticket.

TAG is an optional $1 add-on (playable up to 10 times) that gives you a separate number to match for its own prize. It is a distinct ALC game and is not part of the Keno Atlantic paytable.

At licensed ALC retailers across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland & Labrador, and online at alc.ca.
