How Canadian Keno Works

In Canada, keno is run by provincial and regional lottery corporations rather than a single national operator. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) runs BC Keno, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) runs Daily Keno, and the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) runs Keno Atlantic across the four Atlantic provinces. Loto-Québec runs Banco in Quebec, and the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) runs Keno in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Each game is sold at licensed retailers, and BC Keno is also available online through playnow.com.

The basics are the same as keno anywhere: you pick a set of numbers (your spots), the lottery draws 20 numbers, and your prize depends on how many of your spots match. What changes from province to province is the size of the number pool, how often draws happen, the spot counts you can play, and which bonus add-on is offered.

The big difference: pool size

BC Keno draws from a standard field of 1 to 80, the same as most US keno. Ontario's Daily Keno and Keno Atlantic both draw from a smaller field of 1 to 70. A smaller pool changes the odds and the paytables, so always check the guide for the specific game you are playing.

Key Differences from US Keno

If you are used to US lottery keno, a few things stand out when you play in Canada.

  • 70-number pools. Most US keno games and BC Keno draw from 1 to 80, but Ontario's Daily Keno and Keno Atlantic draw from just 1 to 70. With fewer numbers in the pool, the odds and prize structures are different, so a 1 to 80 paytable will not match a 1 to 70 game.
  • Provincial, not state, lotteries. US keno is run by individual state lotteries. Canadian keno is run by provincial and regional corporations: BCLC in British Columbia, OLG in Ontario, and ALC across the Atlantic provinces. There is no single nationwide keno game.
  • Payouts in Canadian dollars. Prizes and wagers are in CAD. A $200,000 or $250,000 top prize is in Canadian dollars, so convert before comparing with US games.
  • Draw schedules vary widely. BC Keno runs continuously every 3.5 minutes like a typical US monitor game, while Daily Keno draws twice a day and Keno Atlantic just once a day. Scheduled-draw games feel more like a traditional daily lottery than a fast bar game.
