The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All keno probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, the same formula used in every state lottery's official odds disclosures.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 80. Each draw is independent, so past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(80−m, 20−k)C(80, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(80,6) = 38,760 / 300,500,200
= 1 in 7,753

PUT THESE NUMBERS TO WORK

Hot and cold runs never move the odds, but spot count and bet size do. These work out what a Maryland Keno ticket is actually worth.

PLAYING MARYLAND KENO

The results above come from the Maryland Lottery, which runs one of the faster keno cycles in the country.

Draw schedule and what a session costs

Maryland draws roughly every 3.5 minutes, which works out to about 17 games an hour against the 15 an hour you get in 4-minute states. The per-draw odds and expected return are identical either way, but the faster cycle burns through a session budget noticeably quicker: at $1 a draw you are committing about $17 an hour before any add-on.

Find a place to play

Maryland Keno runs at thousands of licensed Maryland Lottery retailers, including convenience stores, gas stations, bars and restaurants holding a keno license, and grocery stores with a lottery counter. The main keno hubs are Baltimore and its suburbs, Annapolis, Frederick, Hagerstown and the Eastern Shore cities, and the Maryland Lottery site has a retailer finder for locating the nearest keno-licensed location.

Bonus and Super Bonus

Maryland is unusual in offering two tiers of multiplier. Bonus costs twice your keno wager, so a $1 play with Bonus is a $3 ticket, and it can multiply winnings by up to 10 times. Super Bonus costs three times your wager, multiplies by up to 20 times, and guarantees at least a doubled payout whenever you win. Neither changes how often you win: they change the size of the wins you do get, and the biggest multipliers are the rarest.

Claiming a win, and what tax applies

Smaller prizes are normally paid straight back at the retailer that sold the ticket, and larger ones go through a lottery claim center or a mail-in claim. Federal rules treat a state lottery keno prize like any other lottery prize: once your winnings minus the wager clear $5,000, the lottery withholds 24% for the IRS before it pays you, and smaller prizes can still be reported on a Form W-2G. Maryland taxes lottery winnings as income as well, and the lottery withholds at the state level on larger prizes, so check the operator's own claim page for the current thresholds and rate before you plan around a number.

Worth knowing

Because Maryland cycles faster than most states, set your budget in draws rather than minutes. Our frequency heatmap above covers every Maryland draw for the selected day, and the odds calculator is preset to the Maryland paytable.
