The math behind keno

HOW WE CALCULATE ODDS

All keno probabilities come from the hypergeometric distribution, the same formula used in every state lottery's official odds disclosures.

HYPERGEOMETRIC PROBABILITY

The probability of matching k of your m spots when 20 numbers are drawn from a pool of 80. Each draw is independent, so past results never influence future outcomes.

C(n,k) is the binomial coefficient: the number of ways to choose k items from n. This is pure combinatorics: no estimates, no approximations.

P(k) = C(m,k) · C(80−m, 20−k)C(80, 20)
Worked example · 6-spot, hit all 6:
C(20,6) / C(80,6) = 38,760 / 300,500,200
= 1 in 7,753

PUT THESE NUMBERS TO WORK

Hot and cold runs never move the odds, but spot count and bet size do. These work out what a Virginia Keno ticket is actually worth.

PLAYING VIRGINIA KENO

These draws come from the Virginia Lottery, which launched keno on August 3, 2020, about a month after the lottery took its games online.

Draw schedule and what a session costs

Virginia draws every 4 minutes, roughly 15 games an hour. Wagers run $1 to $10 per draw and every prize on the paytable scales proportionally, so a $2 wager pays double the $1 figures and a $5 wager pays five times. That puts the 10-spot top prize at $1,000,000 on a $10 play. You can run the same numbers across up to 20 consecutive draws.

Find a place to play

Virginia Keno is sold at licensed Virginia Lottery retailers across the commonwealth: convenience stores and gas stations with lottery terminals, grocery stores with a lottery service counter, restaurants and bars holding a lottery license, and pharmacies and other retailers statewide. The corridors in and around Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Arlington, Alexandria and the Northern Virginia suburbs typically have several keno-enabled retailers close together. You must be 18 or older to play.

Wagers instead of multipliers

Virginia takes a different approach from most keno states: rather than selling a separate multiplier add-on, it lets your base wager do the work. Raising your bet from $1 to $10 multiplies every prize on the paytable by the same factor, which is simpler to reason about than a randomly drawn multiplier because there is no chance element in the boost. What you give up is the lottery-ticket appeal of a surprise 10x.

Claiming a win, and what tax applies

Smaller prizes are normally paid straight back at the retailer that sold the ticket, and larger ones go through a lottery claim center or a mail-in claim. Federal rules treat a state lottery keno prize like any other lottery prize: once your winnings minus the wager clear $5,000, the lottery withholds 24% for the IRS before it pays you, and smaller prizes can still be reported on a Form W-2G. Virginia taxes lottery winnings as income as well, and the lottery withholds at the state level on larger prizes, so check the operator's own claim page for the current thresholds and rate before you plan around a number.

Worth knowing

At 15 draws an hour even $1 bets add up to $15 an hour, and with wagers up to $10 that ceiling rises fast. Virginia's house edge sits around 25 to 30%, in line with other state keno games.
